．幾年鏖戰歷沙場，汗馬功高孰可量？
四海狼煙今已熄，踏花歸去馬蹄香。

這首偈語，形容修道人與煩惱作戰，克服魔障的情形。我們不要以為修道人都是逃避現實，正相反，修道人生是非常積極、艱苦的，我們每天都要與內心貪瞋痴的煩惱魔軍作戰！人，最大、最根本的煩惱就是我執，我執如大元帥，統領了三個軍團：第一軍團的司令就是貪欲，第二軍團的司令是瞋恚，第三軍團的司令就是愚痴。貪、瞋、痴三軍團下面還有八萬四千煩惱魔軍，修行人和這些煩惱魔軍誓不兩立，日日生死鏖戰，所以「幾年鏖戰歷沙場」，多少爭戰下來，如果降服貪念，降服煩惱，當然能成就道業，如果煩惱魔軍降服了你，只好流落到紅塵是非愚痴的無邊苦海中，再去流浪生死了。
修道人如何在心地上降服那些煩惱魔軍？要用喜捨心來對治貪欲，用慈悲心來對治瞋恨，用智慧心來對治愚痴，也就是要勤修戒定慧，熄滅貪瞋痴。如果將煩惱魔軍一一降服，真是「汗馬功高孰可量」，其功德真正不可限量。「四海狼煙今已熄」，禪師們一悟道，心神清明，四海狼煙都平熄，眼睛不亂看，耳朵不亂聽，手不犯殺，口不妄言、兩舌、綺語，自然再也不會去造業了。
「踏花歸去馬蹄香」，這個時候就好像回到故鄉，尋得人生的歸宿，馬蹄得得響，一路芬芳清美的落花，連馬蹄都含香。悟道以後，連說話都芬芳了，萬事萬物都美善了，人生忽然天高地迥，心胸如宇宙無極，世間變得如許舒坦。

The smoke of the four seas has been extinguished, and the fragrance of horseshoe is gone.

This proverb describes monks fighting troubles and overcoming the situation under evil influence. We should not think that all practitioners are escapist. On the contrary, the life of cultivation is very positive and arduous. We have to fight against the evil army of inner greed, anger and ignorance every day! The biggest and most fundamental trouble of human beings is ego. Ego is like a Grand Marshal and commands three legions: the commander of the first regiment is greed, the commander of the second is anger, and the commander of the third army is foolishness. Under the three legions of greed, hatred, and foolishness, there are still 84,000 troubled demon armies. Practitioners and these evil forces are determined to fight each other day and night. If we subdue greed and worry, we can achieve Taoism. If the demon army of defilements defeats you, you will have to fall into the boundless sea of dullness and ignorance, and then wander about life and death.
How do the monks subdue those vexed demons in their hearts? We should treat greed with the joy of giving, anger and hatred with compassion, and fool with wisdom, which means diligently practicing precepts, concentration, wisdom, and extinguishing greed, hatred and ignorance. If you subdue the troubled demon army one by one, it is really a lot of effort and its merits are truly limitless. "The smoke of the four seas is now extinguished." as soon as the Zen masters were enlightened, their minds were clear, and the smoke of the four seas was put out. Their eyes did not look, their ears did not listen, their hands did not commit murder, their mouths did not speak falsely, their tongues and their beautiful words. Naturally, they would never do karma again.
"Tread flowers to get rid of the scent of horseshoes", this time it is like going back to my hometown, finding the end-result of my life, the horseshoes are ringing, the flowers are fragrant and beautiful all the way, and even the horseshoes are fragrant. After enlightenment, even speaking is fragrant, everything is beautiful and good, and life is suddenly as high as heaven, and the mind is as boundless as the universe, so the world becomes so peaceful.
